Context
The window sticker is commonly used for a third party sale (Facebook Marketplace, word of mouth, etc.). We needed a way to display vehicle software upgrades in the window sticker. I worked on the end to end experience, visual design, and designed a new potential business revenue.
To comply with my non-disclosure agreement, I have omitted and obfuscated confidential information in this case study.
Example of a window sticker. You probably have seen these on vehicles at the mall or car dealerships!
How do we protect buyers in third party vehicle sales?
Going to forums to empathize
The project originally started as a need to share the vehicle's information for a third party sale (Facebook Marketplace, word of mouth, etc.). The Product Manager wanted to the following:
But I wanted to empathize with the vehicle owners. Through research on the internet, I found that some owners wanted a way to get their original window sticker as a reference.
Avoiding jail time
One idea was to modify the original window sticker to include software purchases. However, modifying the window sticker is illegal and I have a pretty good record of not going to jail so far.
Improving content for clarity
I worked with a UX Researcher to see how users felt about the design. All participants loved the idea of a digital Monroney sticker, but there were some improvements!
Where we landed
Owners can now reference their vehicle's details in the app.
Two improvements from user research:
Sources cited, adding to credibility, is at the top
Warranty status shown
Displaying purchased software
Owners can see
Software they've purchased and subscribed
Software they can purchase
Helping the selling process
Three easy steps in getting an estimated value. Owners can either trade-in their vehicle to a dealership or share their vehicle's page for third party sales.
Adding confidence for buyers
UX research participants felt more confident if the seller's vehicle information came from an official brand website. Potential buyers could also browse for other/similar vehicles to purchase.
Avoid costly hidden problems
Potential idea for buyers to make a one-time purchase of the vehicle's history report (maintenance, accident, etc.).
Unfortunately, this project was put on hold due to organization restructure and reprioritization. Here are some results from user testing the final product design.
