Context

Over the Air Updates is a mobile app feature that allows owners to schedule their vehicle's software updates. My team picked the project back up and improved the user experience, and content writing.

To comply with my non-disclosure agreement, I have omitted and obfuscated confidential information in this case study.

How can we make updating software less tedious?

Analyzing the original design

The first step was to audit the original design. Some information and features wasn't relevant or was going to be redesigned as a future enhancement.

Giving the user too much flexibility

We found that most of the time users were already committed to one install option. Having the flexibility to select between the two install options was deemed excessive.

Cognitive overload from time selection

The original design had users selecting time down to the minute. When was the last time you wanted an update to install at a super specific time? 😆

Design Iterations

Here is a snippet of our design iterations.

Where we landed

We wanted to show the user just what they needed to see:

  • The update to install

  • Method of installing update

We also added context of how long the install is!

Making the user focus on one task

We separated the install options into two separate screens-requiring users to focus on a single and self-contained task.

45% of users prefer 12AM - 3AM

We learned that a majority of participants would prefer 12AM - 3AM as their suggested install time. Scheduled Install will now default to 3:00 AM.

Improved time selection

This new time selection design makes it easier for the user to schedule their install time. We disabled the buttons if the time selection goes beyond the 24 hour limit.

Being a former dev, I psudeo-coded the time selection experience for the development team to understand.

Recognition and positive results

We had the opportunity to wow'd the Vice President of Design during one of the prototype presentation! Project is still currently in development, but the redesign has had a positive impact on test users.

Amazing work!  I loved the mobile flow and the prototype's choreography."
